Abstract

Recent research was undertaken to investigate the physico-chemical parameters and primary productivity of the Bicherli pond, Beawar from February 1999 to January 2001. According to physico-chemical investigation, the lake water had high nitrate levels, which promoted the growth of phytoplankton. Hence, the quality and quantity of phytoplankton bear much influence on the production potential of an aquatic ecosystem. The peak gross primary production was observed in June and March during both the years of investigation. The GPP values ranged from 0.37 to 0.69 gC m-3 hr-1. The net primary production followed a similar trend as that of gross production in both the years. The NPP ranged from 0.14 to 0.44 gC m-3 hr-1The findings indicate that lakes are organically contaminated and showed rising trend of contamination. Due to ignorance of government and deficiency of awareness of local people pond water deteriorate and moving towards succession. Water hyacinth (Eichhornia) has developed due to eutrophication and lack of effective control programs.
