Abstract
This study investigated caregivers’ perception and management strategies for bedwetting in children using a cross-section of 64 caregivers purposively selected in a Nigerian rural community. The study was guided by four research objectives. Data was collected with a pre-validated structured questionnaire with a Cronbach alpha value of 0.874. Using means, the finding showed that the respondents believed that bedwetting is caused by; too much play (3.96), deep sleep (3.92) drinking too much liquid at night (3.90), and dreaming of urinating (3.53). To manage bedwetting, caregivers employed such strategies as making the child urinate before sleep (3.46), beating the child (3.01), and rewarding the child each for dry nights (2.81). The caregivers further reported they experienced stress (3.85), sleep disturbance (3.75), financial cost (3.07), and embarrassment (2.35) because of bedwetting. Caregivers’ perceptions were both positive and negative as reflected in their management strategies. Therefore, they need sensitization on the actual causes of bedwetting for effective management among children.
