	<Abstract> A facile and stereoselective synthesis of novel trans-3-monosubstituted-3-benzylseleno--lactams () via Lewis acid mediated functionalization of -lactam carbocation equivalents () with active aromatic and heterocyclic compounds (nucleophiles) is described. The structures of these novels -lactams have been established on the basis of spectroscopic studies (FTIR, H NMR, 13C NMR, 77Se NMR, GCMS) and elemental analysis. The cis or trans configuration of the hydrogen/chloro /nucleophile substitutent at C-3 was assigned with respect to C4-H.  </Abstract>
